BANNED From Reddit /r/Singing - How I've Changed & What I've Learned About Honesty

A Warm Welcome:
The newest You Can Sing ANYTHING! minions!

First, I would like to welcome my new subscribers! If you would like to learn a little bit more about me, check out my story.

This website was only created a week ago, yet I have been consistently getting 100-300 unique visitors and 2-3x as many page views & over 40 RSS subscribers!! I really do appreciate everyone for being here!!

I also really appreciate those who have contacted me for more advice about singing; I LOVE talking about this stuff! Seriously, if anyone has any questions I will devout hours of my time to helping you or simply chatting about voice for free.

For those of you interested in my future posts about masculinity; don't worry. I'm clever. I'll find a way to incorporate my debunking of popular PUA / Self-helpy masculinity ideas and tie them to the voice. It's what I do.

Banned From /r/singing??

You heard me right! I was banned from /r/singing (don't worry I'll be back.) I'm not surprised. I was a member of the community for 4 days; dedicating most of my time everyday to writing aggressively styled content and helping people with their singing.

Majoring in voice pedagogy in college, I have put countless hours of research into my ideas. I have read, front to back, just about every significant voice pedagogy text ever written! This doesn't mean I'm the best or the world's most knowledgeable person on every aspect of voice pedagogy, but it does mean that I have a incredibly high degree of confidence in my ideas about contemporary singing technique.

Let's put aside my attention-seeking persona for a moment. Let me be real with you! There are a lot of questions voice pedagogy hasn't answered; but that many people BELIEVE have been answered. If there's one thing any master singer or intellectual knows.. it's that the closer you get to the truth the further away it becomes. Like grasping sand!

Nothing is 100% true when it comes to anything in life! Absolutely NOTHING! We discover the atom, conclude that the world is made of indivisible atomic mass. Problem solved right? Nope! Then we discover subatomic particles; then we realize that matter is actually energy and that the more specific we get about what matter "is" the less certain we become about everything we've ever believed and that TIME ISN'T ACTUALLY FIXED AND THAT TIME IS MERELY A RESULT OF OUR INDIVIDUAL PERCEPTION OF REALITY AS OPPOSED TO A NEWTONIAN CONCRETE IDEAOLO--

*catches breath*

So then why are so many singers so dogmatic about their own ideas about technique??? In short, it's because they're stupid. My technique centers around the idea that while I may have a set of "rules" about singing.. that those rules are meant to be broken!!

Sometimes the rules don't work consistently and the rules that work for me won't necessarily work for you. Singing (and life) is a subjective experience and not an objective experience. It's only important to learn rigid ideas only so that you completely forget them!!

Just like stupid self-help advice: how many times have you followed self-help advice to the letter only to fall flat on your face?? We WANT rules but rules will NEVER produce the end result we're searching for. We find the answers we're seeking only in those moments where we forget that we're seeking answers at all!

I remember struggling with a particular high note for months once. I just couldn't get it and had just about given up. I decided  to take a break from my otherwise reserved, studious life to hang out with some friends and have a beer or two! At one point someone said something that cracked me up; I gently yelled "now THAT's funny!!!" at a fairly high pitch. Confused, I excused myself to the bathroom and used a keyboard app on my phone to find the pitch of what I had just said... it was higher than the note I had been TRYING so hard to "sing."

What I've learned is, that, most people don't want to hear the truth; though they'll be drawn to it like flies on a pile of dog shit! They might argue endlessly & authoritatively that their rules are correct. However, the reality is that their world view is secretly crumbling before their eyes; they're not sure how to process that. It's difficult to say "you know, I've never thought of it like that." It's easy to say "YOURE STUPID IM RIGHT YOURE WRONG BLA BLA BLA BLA."

Just look at some of my more helpful, kind posts! For even SUGGESTING to someone that "Hey, I know everyone says to do X but myself, my students, and many successful singers have found great success with Y. Y is a bit unconventional, but it might work for you! Heres why I think it works...." People get worked up into a FRENZY!!! Down voting the comment into the ground as to dispel any novel ideas that might cause them to ACTUALLY THINK!!!

Fortunately, those of you who are here are a different breed of human. You're willing to let your reality fall apart before your eyes; and pick up the pieces as you lament the destruction of your ego. And that's why I love you!!
